Facelift Q & A

What aesthetic problems are improved with a facelift?

Even if you take care of your skin with a diligent regimen of cleansing, hydrating, and nourishing, you can’t stop the natural aging process. Spending too much time in the sun without protection can cause you to develop dehydration, loss of elasticity, and wrinkles more quickly.

A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, does a great job of improving the visible signs of aging, including problems such as:

  • Loose, sagging skin on your face and neck
  • Deep wrinkles and folds around your nose and mouth
  • Excessive pockets of fat
  • Drooping jowls

A facelift focuses on the lower two-thirds of your face, so many patients combine a facelift with other procedures.

What cosmetic procedures can I combine with a facelift?

When you want to fully rejuvenate your appearance, you can have additional procedures done at the same time as your facelift, including:

Neck lift

A neck lift (lower rhytidectomy) restores a youthful contour by focusing on the signs of aging in your neck and jawline. Dr. Snider removes excess fat and loose skin to eliminate problems such as a double chin, neck wrinkles, and sagging jowls.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the appearance of your eyes. You’ll notice a dramatic difference when you choose this procedure to treat:

  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Excess skin around your eyes
  • Puffy eyelids due to excess fat
  • Bags under your eyes

A blepharoplasty also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes.

Noninvasive facial rejuvenation

You can fight the effects of time and aging without surgery. Whether you want to improve tone and texture, tighten your skin, eliminate age spots, or smooth away lines and wrinkles, Dr. Snider offers a variety of noninvasive treatments to rejuvenate your appearance.

What should I know about male facelifts?

Men increasingly seek facelifts to restore a youthful, masculine appearance. The procedures most often desired by men include facelifts, eyelid surgery, neck lifts, and nose jobs (rhinoplasty).

How will I get a natural-looking facelift?

Many patients considering a facelift worry that they’ll end up with a taut or wind-blown appearance. There’s a secret to avoiding that problem: Your facelift must also lift and tighten the underlying muscles that support your skin.

When the skin is lifted tightly without addressing the underlying structures, the result is over-stretched skin and the loss of your normal face shape and expressions.

To achieve a fabulous facelift that looks natural, Dr. Snider uses meticulous techniques to remove just the right amount of excess skin and fat, and then she tightens and resuspends the deep facial structures, putting them back in their proper anatomical position.

Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

While nearly everyone with age-related facial changes can consider a facelift, the best candidates are healthy individuals who have realistic expectations about their facelift results.

If you’re a smoker or you use any type of nicotine-containing product, you’ll need to stop several weeks before your surgery.

Nicotine shrinks blood vessels and limits blood flow. If you don’t stop smoking, you have an increased risk of developing an infection, delayed healing, and the death of skin, fat, and other tissues.

What should I expect after facelift surgery?

Facelift surgery typically lasts several hours, depending on the number of procedures you combine with your facelift.

You should expect swelling and bruising, but these side effects go away in about two weeks, and then you can return to work. Most patients feel like they’re back to normal within four weeks.
